Air Quality Alert issued June 4 at 4:00PM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC
The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) has issued a Code Orange Ground Level Ozone Action Day for the Upstate region of South Carolina, from 10 AM to 8 PM EDT Friday. Dominant high pressure will make sure cloud cover will be minimal, atmospheric moisture will remain relatively low, and winds will be light. These factors will allow for sufficient ozone production, compounding with weak pollutant dispersion characteristics of an already pollutant-loaded atmosphere. An ozone action day means that atmospheric conditions will likely produce unhealthy concentrations of ground level ozone air pollution. A Code Orange forecast indicates that ground level ozone concentrations are expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, which includes people with lung disease, older adults, and children. Sensitive groups should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion, take more breaks, and do less intense activities, especially during afternoon and early evening hours. You can help prevent ozone pollution by walking or riding your bicycle, taking your lunch to work, reducing idling, conserving energy, and keeping your vehicle properly tuned. About
Singing Pines Recreation Area is a 42-acre day-use facility operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Hartwell Lake, a large reservoir spanning the Georgia-South Carolina border. The facility caters to day visitors seeking lakeside recreation including swimming at two designated beaches, fishing from a dedicated pier, and boating via the on-site ramp and courtesy dock. The picnic facilities include 57 individual sites, two standard shelters with water and electric service suitable for group gatherings, and five smaller mini-shelters. Two comfort stations provide restroom facilities, and two playground areas offer activities for children. While shelters can be reserved in advance for events, there is no overnight camping permitted at this location. The surrounding Hartwell Lake area offers additional recreation opportunities including eight campgrounds operated by the Corps of Engineers for those seeking overnight accommodations. Popular activities on the lake include fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish, as well as water skiing, canoeing, and sailing.
