* WHAT...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Maroon or Hazardous category. * WHERE...Northeast Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 11 AM CDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Everyone is more likely to be affected. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Very heavy smoke is expected across the Arrowhead today, as large wildfires continue to spread. Hot temperatures, when combined with the air pollution, will exacerbate health impacts. A frontal boundary will then spread heavy smoke further south this evening into Wednesday morning, as it moves across northern and central Minnesota. The onset of smoke will be rapid. This boundary eventually passes through the Twin Cities and into southeastern Minnesota on Wednesday or Wednesday evening, bringing heavy smoke even further south. Additional rounds of heavy smoke are possible from Thursday through Friday morning across the alert area.
About
Stony Point Campground occupies a prime waterfront location on Leech Lake in the heart of Chippewa National Forest. The third-largest lake in Minnesota at over 112,000 acres with nearly 200 miles of shoreline, Leech Lake draws anglers targeting walleye, perch, bass, northern pike, and muskie. The campground provides two boat harbors, a boat ramp, and a fish-cleaning shed for those chasing trophy catches. The 44 campsites are arranged in an open, grassy setting surrounded by old growth forest featuring oak, elm, maple, and ash trees, some exceeding 200 years in age. Most sites offer 30-amp electric hookups with gravel driveways accommodating vehicles up to 45 feet. Amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, and an RV dump station. A swimming beach and picnic area round out the facilities. Miles of scenic trails connect to the area including the Paul Bunyan State Trail, Heartland Trail, Soo Line Trail, and North Country National Scenic Trail. The tourist town of Walker is about 14 miles west with restaurants, shops, and festivals throughout the year.
