About
Reuter Campground offers a peaceful setting on a hillside covered with Ponderosa pine and grassy understory in northeastern Wyoming's Black Hills National Forest. The campground honors Emil Reuter, a German immigrant who arrived in the canyon in 1893 and spent his life prospecting the surrounding area. With 24 standard campsites that accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, the campground provides a tranquil base for outdoor recreation. Direct access to the Sundance Trail System from the Reuter Trailhead makes this campground ideal for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The secluded trail network weaves through densely forested canyons and open ridges forming the Bearlodge Mountains, with some ridge tops offering views of the Custer Expedition Route, Devils Tower, and the Twin Missouri Buttes. Many of these trails have existed since the 1800s, serving as routes to reliable water and playing key roles in the area's rich mining history. Wildlife sightings of elk, deer, and turkey are common along the trails. Nearby Warren Peak Lookout Tower, approximately 4 miles north on Forest Service Road 838, provides panoramic views extending into South Dakota and Wyoming. Devils Tower National Monument is also within reach for day trips. The campground operates seasonally and is managed through Recreation.gov reservations.
Directions
From Sundance, travel west on I-90 for approximately 1 mile. Take Exit 185 and travel west on US Highway 14 for 1 mile. Turn right onto County Road 100 (FSR 838) and travel north 3 miles to the campground.
