About
Purple Point Campground is a small, walk-in campground located in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area at the head of Lake Chelan. The campground features 6 tent-only sites positioned along or near a paved road, approximately an 8-minute walk from the Stehekin Landing boat dock. Stehekin is a remote mountain community accessible only by boat, plane, or on foot, with no road connections to the rest of Washington. The campground provides access to several excellent trails including the Imus Trail, Purple Creek Trail, and Lakeshore Trail. Additional trails further up the Stehekin Valley can be reached via foot, bike, or shuttle bus, offering opportunities for extended wilderness backpacking trips. The area is home to black bears, and proper food storage is required. Lake Chelan offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and cold-water swimming. Stehekin Landing has limited services including a small store with basic groceries, a restaurant at the North Cascades Lodge, and public shower and laundry facilities near the landing. The east side of the Cascades enjoys warmer, drier summers than the west side, with summer temperatures reaching the 90s. The campground operates on a reservation system during peak season (late May through early September) and is free and first-come, first-served during the off-season.
Directions
Stehekin is only accessible by boat, plane, or foot with no road connections. Most visitors arrive via passenger ferry on Lake Chelan or private boat (federal dock permit required). The campground is an 8-minute walk north from Stehekin Landing along a paved road.
