About

Yellow River State Forest encompasses over 8,900 acres in Allamakee County, Iowa, within the scenic driftless area characterized by rugged terrain, limestone bluffs, and mature hardwood forests. Established in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the forest is managed for multiple benefits including recreation, timber production, and wildlife habitat. The Paint Creek Unit contains the primary camping facilities with four campgrounds: Little Paint and Big Paint for general camping, plus Creekside and Frontier equestrian campgrounds. All campgrounds are non-modern with vault toilets and require advance reservations through the state system. Drinking water is available near the forest headquarters, though campers should plan for limited amenities. A rental cabin is also available from April 1 through October 31. Additionally, four backcountry camping areas along the backpacking trail are available first-come, first-served at no charge, though campers must register at headquarters. The forest features over 50 miles of multi-purpose trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with Outside magazine naming it among the top 50 hiking spots. Little Paint and Big Paint creeks offer seven miles of stocked trout streams for anglers. The forest's remote character and extensive trail network make it a destination for experienced outdoor enthusiasts seeking a more rugged state forest experience.
