About

Wounded Buck Dispersed Middle is a free dispersed camping area situated in the Hungry Horse Ranger District of Flathead National Forest. Located along Wounded Buck Creek in the South Fork Flathead River drainage, this primitive camping spot provides access to remote wilderness terrain near the Great Bear Wilderness boundary. The site is reached via Forest Road 895C, which branches from the Westside Hungry Horse Reservoir Road (Road 895). As a dispersed camping area, this location offers no developed amenities—campers must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. The area is popular with backcountry enthusiasts seeking solitude and access to hiking trails, including the nearby Wounded Buck Trail #57. The forested setting provides a true wilderness camping experience with potential for wildlife encounters, including both grizzly and black bears. Campers must comply with all Flathead National Forest food storage orders and are limited to a maximum 16-day stay. The area is typically accessible from late spring through fall, with winter access restricted due to snow and seasonal road closures. All trash must be packed out, and campers should use existing fire rings when available.
