About

Wood River Group Overnight Area is a reservable tent-only group camping site located within the Wood River Campground complex in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Situated on the banks of the Big Wood River at an elevation of 6,400 feet, this facility offers a scenic mountain setting surrounded by Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine, Lodgepole pine, and aspen trees. The group area can accommodate up to 40 people for overnight tent camping or up to 150 people for day-use picnicking. The site provides flush toilets, drinking water, and paved roads with paved parking spurs, though the camping surface itself is dirt. An amphitheater with electricity and wooden benches is located a short walk from the group area. The larger Wood River Campground also includes 30 individual campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Recreation opportunities abound in this area. The Big Wood River offers excellent fly-fishing for rainbow, brown, and brook trout, as well as popular float tubing. A self-guided nature trail begins near the amphitheater and leads to a small cave and beaver pond. The 20-mile Harriman Trail passes nearby, providing hiking and biking access with additional spur trails leading to canyons, alpine lakes, and backcountry fishing spots. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area Visitor Center is just 2.5 miles away, and Ketchum lies 10 miles south, while Sun Valley Resort is 7 miles south.

Directions

From Ketchum, take Highway 75 north for 10 miles. Turn at the Wood River Campground sign. Stay on the main campground road for a short distance until you reach the group area parking lot on the right side of the road.
