About
Wolf Gap Recreation Area occupies a historic location on the ridgeline of Great North Mountain along the Virginia-West Virginia border in George Washington National Forest. The site once housed a 1930s African American Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and today serves as a quiet base camp for exploring the surrounding wilderness. The campground provides basic amenities and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors can access several hiking trails directly from the recreation area, most notably the route to Big Schloss, a dramatic rock outcrop offering panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding mountain ranges. The peaceful setting and proximity to quality hiking make this a popular spot for backpackers and trail enthusiasts looking for a rustic mountain experience. Due to its elevation and remote location atop the mountain, the campground is subject to seasonal closures during winter months. No drinking water is available on-site, and campers must bring their own supply. The primitive nature and scenic surroundings appeal to self-sufficient campers seeking a quiet retreat in the Appalachian highlands.
