About

Wolf Gap Recreation Area occupies a historic site where an African American Civilian Conservation Corps camp operated during the 1930s. Located at the crest of Great North Mountain along the Virginia-West Virginia border, this primitive campground offers a quiet, no-frills camping experience in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. The campground operates year-round on a first-come-first-served basis with no fee and no reservations. Campers should be prepared for a self-sufficient experience as there is no potable water available. Vault toilets are provided. Pets are permitted but must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Alcohol is prohibited throughout the recreation area. The primary draw is access to excellent hiking, including the trail to Big Schloss Overlook, a rocky outcrop offering sweeping views of the Allegheny Mountains. Mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives round out the recreational opportunities.
