About
Hawk Recreation Area sits in a secluded pocket of the George Washington National Forest, surrounded by the rugged terrain of the Alleghany Mountains in Hampshire County, West Virginia. The campground's 15 primitive sites offer a quiet escape, with the Tuscarora Trail accessible directly from camp for day hikes or longer backpacking trips. This is a no-frills destination: vault toilets and picnic tables are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must pack in their own supply. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees and no reservations. Access is via Forest Roads 502 and 347, both gravel. The site sees steady use during hunting season in fall, when the remote location and minimal development appeal to hunters looking for an overnight base. Bear activity in the area means proper food storage is required. Alcohol is prohibited, and quiet hours run from 10 PM to 6 AM.
Directions
From I-81: Take exit 296 and turn west on VA-55. Drive 14.5 miles and cross into West Virginia at the top of the mountain (VA-55 becomes WV-55). Descend for 1.0 mile and make a sharp right turn onto Forest Road 502 (gravel). After 2.7 miles, turn left onto Forest Road 347. Camp entrance is on the right.
