About

Widewater State Park's picnic shelters are situated on a scenic peninsula where Aquia Creek and the Potomac River converge. The park features four shelters split between two areas: two near the Visitor Center along Aquia Creek (accessible via Long Pond Trail) and two at the Potomac River recreational area. Each shelter location includes access to parking, ADA-accessible restrooms, and playgrounds. These shelters are strictly day-use facilities available on a first-come, first-served basis or by reservation. They are ideal for family gatherings and group picnics but cannot be used for overnight camping. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. The park also features two one-mile hiking trails, canoe/kayak launches, a motorboat launch, and a gift shop with kayak rentals. For overnight stays, the park offers only four primitive paddle-in campsites accessible by water. Traditional campgrounds and cabins are planned for future development.
