Widewater State Park Paddle-in Campsites
Open — Open year-round. Park hours are 8 a.m. to dusk daily. Paddle-in campsites require advance check-in with park staff. The Potomac Boat Ramp is currently closed due to silt buildup, but car-top launches at Aquia Creek and Potomac River remain open for paddle craft.
About
Located on a scenic peninsula where Aquia Creek and the Potomac River converge in northeastern Stafford County, Widewater State Park offers a distinctive paddle-in camping experience. The park features four primitive campsites that are accessible exclusively by canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, providing an immersive waterfront camping adventure approximately 40 miles south of Washington, D.C. These tent-only sites are designed for paddlers seeking a more remote camping experience while still having access to modern amenities. The campsites are located near a bathhouse facility and are nicely groomed, offering a balance between primitive camping and basic comforts. Paddlers must follow proper check-in procedures upon arrival at the designated campground area. Car-top launches are available at both the Aquia Creek and Potomac River access points within the park. The surrounding area provides excellent opportunities for fishing, with the Potomac River known for largemouth bass, catfish, perch, and striped bass. The park also offers two easy, 1-mile hiking trails, a visitor center with exhibits on local history and wildlife, and picnic facilities. As the park continues development under its master plan, these paddle-in sites represent the current overnight camping option at this emerging state park.
