About

Whitetail Flats Campground is part of Rough Rider State Park, one of North Dakota's designated horse parks located in the scenic badlands near Medora. The campground underwent a major expansion and modernization, transforming from 9 pull-through sites to 24 single sites and 4 double sites. All modern sites include electric (30-50 amp) and water hookups via rural water hydrants near the park entrance. The campground is particularly popular with equestrian campers, offering designated sites with individual horse corrals and access to 66 corrals throughout the park. The park provides excellent access to outdoor recreation, including the 144-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail for horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. In early spring, paddlers can enjoy North Dakota's only State Scenic River, the Little Missouri River, which flows along the park's western edge. The campground features modern amenities including a shower house, vault toilets, dump station, and water hydrants. Horse riders must purchase a daily or annual horse pass in addition to the park entrance fee. Rough Rider State Park was renamed from Sully Creek State Park in 2024, honoring Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders who have strong historical ties to the Medora area. The park's location provides a quiet alternative to nearby Theodore Roosevelt National Park while maintaining close proximity to historic Medora attractions.
