About

Burning Coal Vein Campground sits in the heart of the Little Missouri National Grassland, approximately 27 miles south of Medora, North Dakota. As the southernmost trailhead for the Maah Daah Hey Trail, it provides direct access to one of the most scenic long-distance trails in the northern Great Plains. The campground's remote location offers solitude and unobstructed views of the rugged badlands terrain, including nearby Columnar Juniper and Ponderosa Pine stands. The campground features 8 primitive campsites, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. A vault toilet serves the area. Water from a hand pump is typically available during the primary season but is currently offline for maintenance. Sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted, and the fee is $10 per night. Interagency Senior and Access pass holders receive a 50% discount. The campground is open year-round, though services are limited outside the Memorial Day to Labor Day window. Firewood possession restrictions are in effect to prevent spread of invasive pests; campers should source firewood locally. The 14-day stay limit applies. Motorized vehicles including e-bikes and ATVs are prohibited on trails. Some access routes pass through private land, so visitors should stay on designated roads.

Directions
