About

Roundup Group Horse Camp is the only camping facility in Theodore Roosevelt National Park where horses are permitted. Located 12 miles north of Medora along East River Road in the park's South Unit, this exclusive group campsite provides private accommodations for equestrian groups visiting the North Dakota badlands. The campground can host up to 20 people with 20 horses, or 30 people if camping without horses, and is reserved by one group at a time with no sharing among different parties. The campground features vault toilets, seasonal potable water (though water availability may be limited in May and October depending on weather), and designated fire areas. The site is spacious enough to accommodate large vehicles and trailers over 50 feet. The final 1.5 miles to the campground is gravel road, and the facility is gated with lock combinations provided to registered campers at the park entrance upon arrival. From the campground, hikers and horseback riders can access approximately 70 miles of backcountry trails winding through the rugged badlands terrain. Horseback riding is permitted on all backcountry trails as well as cross-country, though horses are restricted from nature trails under 1 mile, general-use campgrounds, and picnic areas. Only certified weed-free forage is allowed in the park. The Little Missouri River serves as the central feature of this landscape where Theodore Roosevelt ranched and hunted in the 1880s, and the surrounding cottonwood trees turn golden in fall. The site costs $70 per night with a maximum stay of 5 nights.
