About
Wannagan Campground is a remote Forest Service campground nestled in the rolling grasslands and buttes of the Little Missouri National Grassland in western North Dakota. With 10 large, open campsites, the campground accommodates RVs, trailers, and tents in a spacious setting. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and hitching rails are available for equestrian campers. The campground features one accessible vault toilet and a hand pump that provides potable water from spring through fall seasons. The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out policy, so visitors must remove all trash. A day-use parking area is located one-quarter mile south along Road 726. Wannagan Campground is situated near the northern end of the Buffalo Gap Trail and provides easy access to the Maah Daah Hey Trail, with the trailhead approximately half a mile south of the campground entrance. The switchbacks on the Maah Daah Hey Trail offer sweeping vistas of the region, including scenic views of large buttes. All trails are non-motorized only. The campground is open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Limited services are available after Labor Day and before Memorial Day, including no potable water during winter months. Campers must pay the $10 nightly fee via the fee tube at the campground kiosk. A 14-day consecutive stay limit applies. The campground is located about 30-40 minutes from Medora via gravel and dirt back roads.
