About

Wannagan Campground is a remote, year-round camping destination nestled in the North Dakota Badlands within the Dakota Prairie Grasslands. The campground features 10 large, open campsites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs. Six sites are single-unit back-in spurs, while four sites are pull-through configurations. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Hitching rails are available for equestrians. Amenities include an ADA-accessible vault toilet (seasonally accessible spring through fall) and potable drinking water from a hand pump. The water system operates from spring through fall and is turned off during winter months. There are no hookups, showers, or dump stations. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day consecutive stay limit. Wannagan serves as an excellent meeting point for the north end of the Buffalo Gap Trail and provides direct access to the Maah Daah Hey Trail. The nearby switchbacks on the Maah Daah Hey offer sweeping vistas of the surrounding badlands and large buttes. E-bikes, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles are prohibited on the trails.
