About

Buffalo Gap Campground sits in the heart of North Dakota's Dakota Prairie Grasslands, surrounded by colorful buttes and expansive grassland terrain. The campground offers 36 paved sites spread across two loops (Mandan and Hidatsa), each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Two comfort stations provide flush toilets and sinks, with three showers available from mid-May to mid-October. A vault toilet is also on site. Potable water is available from a hand pump. The area is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and birders, with pronghorn, mule deer, and white-tailed deer frequently passing through camp. The Buffalo Gap Viewpoint Trail near the entrance offers a 600-foot hike up a steep scoria hill to an overlook with interpretive panels on the region's geologic history. A 1.3-mile spur trail connects the campground to the Buffalo Gap Trail, which in turn links to the renowned Maah Daah Hey Trail for extended hiking and mountain biking adventures. Theodore Roosevelt National Park's South Unit and the historic town of Medora are just six miles east, providing additional recreational opportunities and services. The campground is managed by the Medora Ranger District and operates year-round, though services are limited outside the Memorial Day to Labor Day season when a camp host is present Thursday through Sunday.
