About

Buffalo Gap Campground is located in the heart of the Little Missouri National Grasslands in western North Dakota, offering a rustic camping experience surrounded by colorful buttes and badlands scenery. The campground features 35 paved campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. A group pavilion picnic area is available near the front entrance. The campground provides convenient access to outdoor recreation, including the Buffalo Gap Trail for day hiking and connections to the Maah Daah Hey Trail for longer backpacking adventures. Wildlife viewing is common, with pronghorn, mule deer, and white-tailed deer frequently passing through. The area attracts birders and plant enthusiasts during spring and summer months. The Buffalo Gap Viewpoint near the entrance offers a 600-foot hike up a steep scoria hill to a spectacular overlook with interpretive panels on the area's geologic history. Facilities include two comfort stations with sinks and flush toilets, three showers (available mid-May to mid-October), and one vault toilet. Sites can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet on paved parking pads, though no hookups are available. The campground is located approximately six miles west of Medora, providing easy access to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the historic town of Medora. A seasonal camp host is on-site from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
