About

Cedar Campground is one of three camping areas at Rough Rider State Park, formerly known as Sully Creek State Park, situated 2.5 miles south of Medora in Billings County. Unlike the open Whitetail Flats loop, Cedar offers a wooded setting with sites nestled among trees for enhanced privacy and natural shade. The loop features both pull-through and back-in sites suitable for tents and smaller RVs, though a 10-foot height restriction applies due to the tree canopy. The park underwent a $4 million expansion project that nearly doubled camping capacity from 35 to 70 sites across all loops. New comfort stations built as FEMA-designated storm shelters provide modern restroom and shower amenities. The park includes vault toilets, a shower house, drinking water, and a dump station. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Firewood is available for purchase at the park office. Rough Rider State Park serves as a gateway to the North Dakota Badlands, providing access to the Little Missouri River for canoeing and kayaking, and serving as a trailhead for the 170-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail. The park also accommodates equestrian users with 66 corrals, a round pen, and hay sales. Medora's historic downtown and Theodore Roosevelt National Park are just minutes away.

Directions

From Medora, head 2.25 miles south on East River Road (paved), then 0.5 mile west on gravel road. The park is located between mile markers 47-48 on the Maah Daah Hey Trail.
