About

Coal Creek Campground is a small, rustic campground operated by the USFS within Dakota Prairie Grasslands, situated in the colorful North Dakota badlands approximately 12 miles south of Medora. The campground features 10 campsites spread across a hillside, with sites 5-10 positioned on higher ground offering panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. Each site includes a gravel parking pad, fire ring with grill, and picnic table. The campground provides two vault toilets and a solar-powered water well with potable water available seasonally from spring through fall. Water is turned off during winter months. All camping is first-come, first-served with payment via self-service fee envelopes. The campground provides direct access to the Maah Daah Hey Trail via a short 2/3-mile connector trail heading west. Firewood import restrictions are in effect to prevent the spread of Emerald Ash Borer and pine beetles. Campers must pack out all trash following Leave No Trace principles.

Directions

From Medora, travel south on East River Road FH3 approximately 12 miles. The campground entrance is on the west side of the road.
