About

White River Campground is Mount Rainier National Park's highest campground with amenities, sitting at 4,440 feet elevation in a steep-walled canyon beside the White River. The campground's 88 sites are tucked into a forest setting where the Wonderland Trail passes through on its route between Sunrise and Summerland. Due to its elevation, winter lingers long and arrives early at White River, making it one of the last campgrounds to open in the park each summer. The campground serves as an excellent base for hikers and climbers exploring the park's northeastern sector. Trails from the campground access Glacier Basin, Burroughs Mountain, and connect to the 93-mile Wonderland Trail that circumnavigates Mount Rainier. The steep canyon setting means curves on the access road can be tight, limiting RV lengths to 27 feet and trailers to 18 feet. White River operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Sites cost $20 per night (or $10 for holders of America the Beautiful Senior or Access passes) and can accommodate up to 2 tents and 6 people. Payment is made via the Recreation.gov mobile app upon arrival. The campground typically opens in late June or early July and closes in late September, with exact dates varying based on snow conditions and weather.
