Westmoreland State Park Cabins
Open — All cabins are closed for major renovations from November 1, 2024, through October 2026. The park itself remains open for day use.
About
Westmoreland State Park extends along the Potomac River on Virginia's Northern Neck peninsula, offering 26 cabins amid 1,321 acres of coastal plain forest. The park features one-room log efficiencies and one- and two-bedroom cabins equipped with full kitchens, wood-burning fireplaces, heat pumps, and screened porches on select units. Each cabin includes a grill and picnic table, with free boat launching for overnight guests. The park is renowned for fossil hunting along its beaches, where visitors search for ancient shark teeth near the dramatic Horsehead Cliffs. Six miles of trails wind through the property, including the Rock Springs Pond Trail and beach access routes. Fishing in the Potomac River is available year-round, and the park offers kayak and paddleboard rentals seasonally. The visitor center provides educational exhibits about local history and fossils. Located minutes from George Washington's birthplace and Stratford Hall, the park was one of Virginia's six original state parks, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Amenities include a Discovery Center with wildlife exhibits, Murphy Hall meeting facility, seasonal snack bar, camp store, and a boat ramp. The park hosts interpretive programs including guided kayak tours and fossil hikes from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
