The Popes Creek Picnic Pavilion sits on a bluff overlooking the mouth of Popes Creek within George Washington Birthplace National Monument. The pavilion structure, measuring 30 by 42 feet, was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and contains 12 picnic tables and two charcoal grills. Restrooms and a water fountain are located approximately 80 feet from the pavilion. This is a day-use facility only with no overnight camping permitted. The picnic area is open Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with free admission. Parking accommodates 25 vehicles on a first-come, first-served basis. A connecting footbridge leads to the historic area, colonial farm, garden, visitor center, and gift shop. Nearby recreational opportunities include fishing on Popes Creek and the Potomac River (Virginia fishing license required), kayaking from the Potomac River beach, hiking the one-mile nature trail, and bird watching. Groups of 25 or more may require a Special Use Permit for pavilion use.
