Frog Flat

Frog Flat consists of sites 1 through 5 within the larger Castle Rock Trail Camp, situated in the rugged terrain of Castle Rock State Park. The trail camp is accessed by hiking 2.6 miles from the Robert C. Kirkwood parking lot on Highway 35 via the Saratoga Gap Trail. The surrounding landscape features dramatic sandstone formations, dense forests of Douglas fir, madrone, and black oak, and sweeping views of the San Lorenzo Valley and Pacific Ocean. The primitive campsites each include a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets and trash receptacles shared among campers. Campers should bring their own water as potable water availability is limited. A camp shelter is available for use during inclement weather. The area is popular with hikers and rock climbers, with Castle Rock formation serving as a prominent climbing destination. Castle Rock Trail Camp operates with 20 total sites: 15 available by reservation and 5 on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are processed Monday through Friday between 1pm and 5pm, up to 60 days in advance. First-come, first-served campers must check in at the Robert C. Kirkwood parking lot.

Directions

From Highway 9, take Highway 35 (Skyline Boulevard) south for 2.5 miles to the Robert C. Kirkwood parking lot on the west side of the road. From there, hike 2.6 miles via the Saratoga Gap Trail to reach the trail camp.
