About

Wallow Mountain Lookout stands as part of Idaho's historic fire detection network in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests of northern Idaho. The site has hosted fire lookout structures since the 1920s when the original D-6 Cupola cabin was constructed. The current structure, built in 1968, is a Region 6 Flat Top cabin mounted on a 10-foot open timber tower. In 2016, the U.S. Forest Service solicited public comment on a proposal to convert Wallow Mountain Lookout into an overnight rental at $45 per night, alongside Scurvy Mountain Lookout and two cabins. However, unlike Scurvy Mountain which did become available for booking, Wallow Mountain Lookout never appeared in the recreation rental program and is not currently listed on Recreation.gov. The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests offer several other lookout rentals including Bald Mountain, Castle Butte, Lookout Butte, and Scurvy Mountain Lookouts for those seeking a fire tower experience in this region.
