About

Wallow Mountain Lookout stands as a testament to the Forest Service's fire detection heritage, built in 1968 as a Region 6 Flat Top cabin atop a 10-foot open timber tower. This structure replaced earlier lookouts dating back to the 1920s, including a D-6 Cupola cabin and a 1932 Region 1/L-4 cabin on a log crib. The lookout is located in the North Fork Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests in Clearwater County, Idaho. The lookout is managed as a recreation rental and reservations are available through Recreation.gov. This remote accommodation provides visitors with an authentic backcountry experience and panoramic views of the rugged Clearwater landscape. The lookout offers a unique perspective on forest history while serving as a basecamp for exploring the surrounding national forest lands.

Directions

Access the lookout via the Wallow Mountain Trail #3592, starting at the Salmon Lakes - Waldo Mountain Trailhead.
