About
Wall Creek Cabin is a historic two-room dwelling at the east base of Montana's Gravelly Range, offering rustic accommodations in prime big game country. Built around 1930, the cabin originally served as crew quarters for the Wall Creek Ranger District until the 1940s. The site remains an active administrative compound with a barn and main ranger cabin used by grazing permit holders, so guests should expect occasional ranch activity with cowboys, horses, and dogs starting their days early. The cabin sleeps four on two bunk beds and is heated by a wood-burning stove, with firewood provided for cabin use only. Minimal cooking equipment is included, but guests must bring disposable propane canisters for camp stoves and lanterns. A spring west of the cabin provides water that must be treated before drinking. A vault toilet is available, but there's no garbage service, so pack-it-in, pack-it-out practices are required. Guests are expected to clean the cabin and replenish split wood before departure. Located at 6,150 feet in an open grassy area backed by forested slopes, the cabin provides excellent access to wildlife viewing and hunting opportunities. The area is thick with elk, deer, moose, antelope, and bears. Motorized trail access is about a mile north at Bucks Nest, while the non-motorized Hyde Creek trail is just north of the site. The cabin is accessed via gravel Forest Road 324, approximately 24 miles south of Ennis through the Wall Creek Wildlife Management Area.
Directions
From Ennis, travel south on US Highway 287 for approximately 24 miles. After crossing Indian Creek at the McAtee Bridge fishing access site, turn right (west) onto Forest Road 324. Follow signs to Wall Creek Station for approximately 6-7 miles through the Wall Creek Wildlife Management Area. Turn right through the gate at the Wall Creek Station sign and travel a half mile to another gate. Enter the administrative site and the cabin is just beyond.
