About

Black Butte Cabin is a snug log cabin that sits high in the Gravelly Mountains at 8,900 feet elevation. Originally part of the old Madison National Forest, the cabin was built in 1919 as an intermediate summer station for inspections of sheep allotments. It sleeps four people and has beautiful views of Lion Mountain and the headwaters of Standard Creek. The primitive one-room cabin has two bunkbeds with mattress pads, a table and chairs, basic cooking equipment, and a wood stove for heat. A propane camp stove and lantern are provided, but guests must bring their own small disposable propane canisters. Firewood for the wood stove is stacked behind the cabin, though availability is not guaranteed, especially in late winter. A vault toilet outhouse is located about 100 feet from the cabin. Guests must bring their own water for all purposes, as well as bedding, food, and other necessities. The area provides access to numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicles during warmer months, and is popular for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in winter. Hikers can summit Black Butte on a user-created trail. The cabin serves as an excellent base for viewing wildflowers along Gravelly Range Road in early summer and for hunting pronghorn antelope and other wildlife. Standard Creek offers fishing for cutthroat and brown trout. The cabin is located just off Standard Creek Road 237 and can receive considerable traffic on weekends.

Directions

From Ennis, travel south on US Highway 287 for about 32 miles to the West Fork Rest Area. Turn right onto West Fork Road/Forest Road 209 and continue for about 2 miles. Turn right onto Standard Creek Road/Forest Road 237 and travel 18 miles to the cabin. The cabin is located one quarter mile from the junction of Forest Service roads FS290, FS1012 and FS237. Four-wheel drive required in summer and fall; snowmobile access necessary in winter for up to 21 miles.
