About

Bear Creek Bunkhouse is a historic one-room cabin constructed in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, originally serving as crew quarters and a garage. Located at 6,250 feet elevation at the edge of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness in the Madison Range, the bunkhouse sits amid open meadows surrounded by mature aspen and Douglas fir trees, with Bear Creek running just behind the property. The bunkhouse is used as an administrative site in summer and fall but is open to public rental between December and April. It features electricity, lights, two single beds with foam pads (accommodating up to two people), a table with chairs, refrigerator, stove, oven, basic cooking equipment, and cleaning supplies. A wood stove provides heat, with firewood stacked to the east of the cabin. A vault toilet is located 150 feet east, near the larger Bear Creek Cabin, with two additional toilets at the adjacent campground. The location offers excellent winter recreation opportunities, including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on nearby trails, with popular access to climb Sphinx Mountain. The trailhead is popular year-round, especially during hunting season. Visitors must bring their own drinking water, as the creek is the only water source and may be difficult to access in deep snow. The road may be muddy or snow-covered and is not always plowed. The Bear Creek Wildlife Management Area immediately north is closed to all off-trail access between December 2 and May 15. Renters must clean the facility before departure and replenish the wood supply.

Directions

From Ennis, take Highway 287 south for 11 miles to Cameron, Montana. From Cameron, turn east on Bear Creek Loop and continue approximately 6 miles to the cabin. The last several miles is gravel or dirt, which may be muddy or snow-covered and may not always be plowed.
