About
Volga River State Recreation Area encompasses nearly 5,800 acres of northeast Iowa's most rugged terrain, often called "Little Switzerland" for its dramatic topography. Old steel bridges cross the Volga River, and the landscape shifts between native prairie, hardwood forests, and sandstone outcrops. The park centers on 138-acre Frog Hollow Lake, which offers a universally accessible boat ramp and floating fishing pier. Two distinct campgrounds serve different camping styles. Lakeview Campground provides 41 modern sites including 38 full hookups with concrete pull-through pads, a modern shower and restroom building, and an RV dump station. Sites toward the back offer more seclusion. Albany Campground caters to equestrian campers with 35 electric sites featuring hitching posts; horses arriving from out of state require current health certificates and negative Coggins tests. Twenty-two miles of rugged multi-use trails traverse the property, with recent rock surfacing improvements underway. A 20-target archery course, hunting opportunities with 200-yard campground setbacks, and ongoing habitat restoration including 120 acres of new prairie seedings round out the recreational offerings.
