About

Van Deriet Campground, also known as Vanderiet Memorial Pilots Campground, is a distinctive fly-in camping facility located 30 miles west of Augusta in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. This remote campground offers 6 primitive campsites adjacent to a backcountry airstrip, making it accessible only by aircraft. There is no vehicle access to this location. The campground is maintained with the assistance of the Montana Aeronautics Division and serves primarily as a destination for recreational pilots exploring Montana's backcountry. Despite its remote location, the site provides essential amenities including drinking water from a hand pump and vault toilets. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees. Bears frequently visit this area, and mandatory food storage regulations are in effect. All food must be kept in approved containers and out of sight, with all food removed from the area after eating. The campground is not ADA accessible. Visitors should check motor vehicle use regulations, food storage orders, and current fire restrictions before arriving. Due to its remote location and lack of road access, this campground experiences light usage and offers a truly backcountry camping experience.
