About

Benchmark Campground sits in the Rocky Mountain Range of Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, approximately 30 miles west of Augusta via Forest Road 235. This 25-site campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is one of the primary access points to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, making it heavily used during peak season. The campground attracts backpackers, horseback riders, and anglers drawn to the nearby Sun River. The facility offers basic amenities including vault toilets, though potable water is currently unavailable and campers should bring their own supply. Sites include the standard picnic tables and fire rings typical of USFS campgrounds. Bears frequently use the area, and mandatory food storage in approved containers is strictly enforced. The Rocky Mountain Ranger District manages this site along with numerous other campgrounds in the Sun River corridor. Benchmark Campground's remote location and wilderness access contribute to its popularity. Overnight camping costs $10 per night for a single site, with an additional $5 fee for extra vehicles. Cash or check payment is required. Interagency Senior and Access Pass holders receive a 50% discount on the base camping fee only.
