About

Benchmark Packer Corrals is a specialized horse camping facility in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, designed exclusively for permitted outfitters and packers working in the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex. Located approximately 30 miles west of Augusta, Montana along Benchmark Road, this site serves as a critical staging area for commercial wilderness operations. The facility features packer corrals and basic amenities but is not available for public recreation use. The corrals are situated in heavy-use backcountry terrain near the Continental Divide, providing outfitters with essential infrastructure for horse and mule packing operations. While the nearby Benchmark Campground offers public camping opportunities, the Packer Corrals themselves are reserved through special use permits for commercial outfitting operations only. Facilities include vault toilets, but visitors should note that no drinking water is available on-site. The remote location along Benchmark Road provides direct access to wilderness trailheads, making it a strategic base for guided hunting, fishing, and backcountry trips into the Bob Marshall, Scapegoat, and Great Bear wilderness areas.
