Upper Blue Campground

Open — Open year-round, first-come, first-served. No reservations. No fee. When winter weather makes Forest Route 281 inaccessible, access may be limited or closed.

About

Upper Blue Campground is a small, primitive Forest Service campground located in the remote Blue River Valley of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Situated below high bluffs and near the Blue River, the campground offers a rustic camping experience off the beaten path with only 3 campsites, making it ideal for those seeking solitude and a true backcountry feel. Two of the three sites feature Adirondack-style shelters, providing basic protection from the elements. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fee, though campers should be prepared for minimal amenities. There is no potable water available, and visitors must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash, as no garbage service is provided. A vault toilet is available on-site. The remote location along Forest Route 281, approximately 17 miles southeast of Alpine, makes this an excellent base camp for exploring the Blue Range Primitive Area, fishing in the Blue River, and wildlife viewing. The 14-day stay limit allows for extended visits to this beautiful, lightly-used area.

Directions

From Alpine, drive southeast on US Highway 180 for approximately 3 miles to Forest Route 281 (Blue River Road, across from Luna Lake). Turn right (south) onto FR 281 and continue south for approximately 14 miles to Upper Blue Campground.
