About
Luna Lake Campground occupies an open stand of ponderosa pines at 8,000 feet elevation in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, approximately 5 miles east of Alpine, Arizona near the New Mexico border. The campground provides direct access to 75-acre Luna Lake, which supports a rainbow trout fishery maintained by Arizona Game and Fish Department. Fishing peaks early in the season from ice-out through late June, as the lake is drawn down for irrigation during summer months. The campground features 29 individual standard nonelectric sites and 3 group sites capable of accommodating 40, 56, and 120 people respectively. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and cooking grill. Vault toilets are provided throughout. Potable water availability varies by season and should be confirmed before arrival. Trash dumpsters are available Memorial Day through Labor Day. A non-motorized trail system at Luna Lake Bicycle Trailhead offers routes for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The nearby day-use area includes a boat launch, fishing pier, accessible trail, marina, and bait shop. Bears frequent the area, so proper food storage is essential. The town of Alpine provides shopping and services, and the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway offers additional sightseeing opportunities.
Directions
From Alpine, drive 5 miles east on US Highway 180 and turn north (left) onto Forest Road 570 just east of Luna Lake. Follow the graveled all-weather road 1 mile to the campground.
