The Two Mile Prairie Tract Bearhead Hammock Equestrian Primitive Campsites are located within the Two Mile Prairie Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest in Citrus County, about 10 miles north of Inverness. This primitive campground caters specifically to equestrians with three campsites that each include covered horse stalls and access to 10.5 miles of equestrian trails, including the scenic 8.3-mile Bear Head Hammock loop trail with wet weather bypass routes. The campground offers basic amenities including vault toilet restrooms and a hand pump providing non-potable water. There is no bathhouse or electricity. Each site accommodates up to 8 people and can handle equipment up to 60 feet in length, with fire rings and picnic tables provided. The primitive setting allows for excellent stargazing, bird watching, wildlife viewing, and wildflower viewing opportunities. Situated along the southern bank of the Withlacoochee River, an Outstanding Florida Water, the area features diverse habitats including open prairie and lush forest with oaks, pines, and palms. The surrounding 165,000-acre Withlacoochee State Forest was ranked #1 on the World Wildlife Fund's "10 Coolest Places You've Never Seen in North America" in 1999. Wildlife commonly spotted includes bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, and turkeys. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica.

Directions

From Interstate 75, take exit 350 to SR-200 S. Travel 3.4 miles on SR-200 S, which changes to SR-200 SW. Continue another 13.1 miles and turn right on N Lecanto Hwy/C-491. Travel 2.4 miles to arrive at Bear Head Hammock.
