About
Ross Prairie Trailhead and Campground is situated along the southern boundary of the Cross Florida Greenway, adjacent to Ross Prairie State Forest in Marion County. This full-service campground features 14 sites, each equipped with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical pedestals plus potable water hookups. The campground is particularly equestrian-friendly, offering high tie posts at all sites with the option for personal portable stalls or pens, along with a dedicated horse wash-down area for post-ride cool down. An on-site campground host is available year-round. The area is ecologically unique due to the adjacent placement of high, dry sandhill communities next to wetland prairie systems, providing habitat to a wide range of species. When the ephemeral prairie is flooded, visitors can spot dozens of waterfowl, wading birds, alligators, and other wildlife. The upland areas are home to white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobcat, gopher tortoises, and numerous bird species including hawks. The campground provides access to extensive trail systems including approximately 5.7 miles of natural surface single-track mountain biking trails, 14 miles of equestrian trails, and the Florida National Scenic Trail. A 1.3-mile multi-use section connects to a 16-mile paved trail ending at Santos Trailhead. Day-use facilities include equestrian staging areas, bike and hike trailheads, restrooms with potable water, and a picnic pavilion. The campground includes a bathhouse and dump station for registered campers.
