Twin Peaks Campground

Open — Open year-round for reservations through Recreation.gov. Sites 71-145 are closed April through December. Peak season is November 15 through April 15, with a 14-day stay limit during peak season. Stage Two fire restrictions are in effect: fires permitted only in provided raised grills or personal raised firepits.

West and East Border Roads closed for public safety

All border roads a remain closed (the dirt roads directly along the border and all crossover roads leading from South Puerto Blanco Drive to the border) to all public vehicle and pedestrian traffic for public safety. South Puerto Blanco Drive remains open

Gachado Line Camp open. Southeast border road and access roads closed

El Camino De Dos Republicas remains open from SR85 to Gachado Line Camp. Dos Lomitas is not accessible. The southeast border road from Lukeville Port of Entry eastward to the Santa Rosa Mountains is closed to public vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Pozo Nuevo Road to Bates Well Ranch High Clearance, 4-Wheel Drive Only

High Clearance, 4-wheel drive is required from where Pozo Nuevo Road begins along South Puerto Blanch Drive to Bates Well Ranch area. The road is washed out in areas. Bates Well Ranch is still accessible from the north on Darby Well Road.

Kris Eggle Visitor Center Delayed Opening July 4th, 2024

The Kris Eggle Visitor Center will be opening at 11 am on July 4th, 2024. The building will close at 4 pm, as per normal hours of operation. All scenic drives and hikes will remain open unless posted otherwise.

Kris Eggle Visitor Center Closed December 24th-25th, 2024

The Kris Eggle Visitor Center will be closed all day on December 24th and 25th, 2024 for the Christmas holiday. All scenic drives, hikes, and campgrounds will remain open unless posted otherwise. For camping reservations, please visit Recreation.gov

Feral Dogs May Be Seen in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

Feral dogs may be present at the Twin Peaks Campground and around the Kris Eggle Visitor Center. Visitors should not attempt to feed or water these dogs or approach them in any way as they may carry disease or become hostile.

Fire Restrictions in Place for Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

Effective Monday, May 12, 2025, the monument will be under Stage Two fire restrictions. Burning charcoal or wood, including smoking and fireworks are prohibited in all areas within the monument except for liquid petroleum or propane stoves

Shoulder Work on Highway 85

Road crews will be clearing vegetation along State Route 85 beginning September 16, 2025 and throughout the remainder of the week. Motorists are advised to drive with caution as there may be workers and/or equipment in the road.

About

Twin Peaks Campground serves as the primary developed campground at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, situated 1.5 miles from the Kris Eggle Visitor Center in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. The campground exhibits an extraordinary collection of Sonoran Desert flora and fauna, with organ pipe cacti, saguaros, and 31 species of cacti thriving in this protected wilderness. The campground offers 208 campsites: 174 sites accommodate RVs with several sites able to handle RVs up to 45 feet in length, and 34 tent-only sites. All campsites feature picnic tables and raised charcoal grills. Restrooms with flush toilets and running water are distributed throughout the campground, with some facilities equipped with solar-heated showers. A dump station with potable water is located at the southern end of the campground. Hiking opportunities include the 0.9-mile perimeter trail around the campground, the 1.2-mile Desert View Trail, and access to numerous trails throughout the monument. Photography, birding, and stargazing are popular activities. The campground provides an ideal base for exploring the monument's scenic drives and experiencing the flourishing Sonoran Desert ecosystem.

Directions

From the Kris Eggle Visitor Center on Highway 85, turn left (east) immediately past the visitor center at the sign for Twin Peaks Campground. Follow the road 1.5 miles to reach the campground. From Tucson: take SR 86 west to Why, then turn left on SR 85 south for 22 miles. From Phoenix: take I-10 to SR 85 south through Gila Bend and Why.
