About

Horse Thief Campground at Trappers Lake is a specialized equestrian facility in the White River National Forest designed exclusively for campers with horses and pack stock. Situated at 9,700 feet elevation, the campground offers 5 campsites, each equipped with a corral for livestock. The long spurs can accommodate large trailers up to 60 feet, and an RV dump station is available within the Trappers Lake campground complex. The campground sits adjacent to the Flat Tops Wilderness, offering direct access to an extensive trail network through glacier-carved mountains and pothole lakes. Trappers Lake itself is known as the Cradle of Wilderness, having inspired the wilderness preservation movement. Only certified weed-free hay is permitted in the campground, and no hay is allowed within the Flat Tops Wilderness; campers must use certified weed-free pellets or cubes instead. Facilities include vault toilets, fire grates, picnic tables, trash disposal, and bear boxes. Motorized boats and wheeled carts for boat transport are prohibited on Trappers Lake. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations.
