About

Cutthroat Campground is one of five Forest Service campgrounds in the Trappers Lake area of the White River National Forest in northwestern Colorado. The campground sits at 9,627 feet elevation, very near the Flat Tops Wilderness boundary and close to the Trappers Lake Outlet Trailhead. The 14 sites offer vault toilets, potable water, fire rings, picnic tables, and bear-proof food storage lockers. Trappers Lake is known as the "Cradle of Wilderness" and contains a native strain of Colorado River cutthroat trout. The 302-acre lake lies completely within the Flat Tops Wilderness, meaning motorized boats and wheeled carts for boat transport are prohibited. An RV dump station is available within the broader Trappers Lake campground complex for campers needing to service their rigs. Due to the high elevation, the campground operates seasonally, typically opening in late May or early June and closing in September or October depending on snow conditions. Dispersed camping is prohibited within 1/4 mile of Trappers Lake and the developed campgrounds.
