About

Himes Peak Campground sits at approximately 9,000 feet elevation in the Blanco Ranger District of the White River National Forest, about 6 miles north of Trappers Lake. This small, first-come, first-served campground offers 11 sites in a remote high-country setting surrounded by spruce-fir forest. The campground serves as a trailhead for Big Fish Trail #1819, providing direct access to the Flat Tops Wilderness for day hikes or extended backcountry trips. Rainbow Lake and Big Fish Lake are nearby and offer good fishing for native cutthroat trout. The area is known for productive elk hunting in season. Facilities are primitive: vault toilets are available but potable water is not reliable. Campers should bring their own water supply. The campground operates seasonally, typically opening in late June after snowmelt and closing in early fall. Due to the remote location and single-lane forest roads, this campground is best suited for tents and smaller camping vehicles.

Directions

From Meeker, travel east on Colorado Highway 13 for 1 mile, then turn right (east) on Rio Blanco County Road 8 and continue for 39 miles. Turn south on Trappers Lake Road (Forest Road 205) and continue 6 miles to the campground.
