About

Devils Alley Hiker-Biker Campsite sits at mile 144.5 of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath in Allegany County, Maryland. As one of 31 primitive hiker-biker campsites spaced approximately every 5-7 miles along the canal, it serves as an overnight stop for cyclists and hikers traversing the historic towpath. The site is walk-in only, requiring no reservations or fees. This basic campsite provides essential amenities including a chemical toilet, picnic table, and grill. Fires are restricted to the provided grill or portable grills positioned off the ground, and firewood may be collected from dead material on the ground within the campground. A hand-pumped water source is available seasonally, but the water is non-potable and must be filtered, chemically treated, or boiled before use. Water service is turned off from mid-November through mid-April. Overnight stays are limited to one night per site per trip, with a maximum of 8 people per site. The campsite is situated near the Potomac River and may be subject to flooding after heavy rains. No cell phone reception should be expected, and the site is not ADA accessible. Pets are allowed. The C&O Canal National Historical Park is a narrow, linear park following the Potomac River, offering a unique camping experience in a historic corridor.
