Balsam Mt. Campground

Closed — Closed indefinitely due to damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024. The Balsam Mountain area, including the campground and access roads, remains closed with no reopening date announced.

About

Balsam Mountain Campground is the highest and most remote campground in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, situated at an elevation of 5,310 feet. The elevation creates a moderate climate with mild summer daytime temperatures rarely exceeding 70°F and nighttime lows around 50°F, making it ideal for escaping the heat of the valley below. The campground is surrounded by mountain ranges and pristine streams, offering a secluded camping experience away from the more crowded areas of the park. The campground features 43 paved sites that can accommodate both tent campers and RVs or trailers up to 24 feet in length. Amenities include flush toilets, potable water, and fire rings at each site, though there are no hookups, showers, or lights in the restrooms. One accessible campsite is available. The campground operates on a reservation-only basis during its season, typically from late May through mid-October, with stays limited to 14 consecutive days and up to six people per site. Due to the campground's remote location accessed via Heintooga Ridge Road and Balsam Mountain Road, visitors should be prepared for mountain weather that can change rapidly. All food must be stored properly in vehicles or hard-sided camping units due to bear activity. The area offers access to hiking trails and the solitude of one of the park's least-visited regions.

Directions

Accessed via Heintooga Ridge Road and Balsam Mountain Road off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Cell phone coverage is very limited in the area.
