THORPE GULCH

Open — Open year-round for dispersed camping, though winter access may be limited or impossible due to snow. No reservations required; first-come, first-served.

About

Thorpe Gulch is a dispersed camping area situated in the Pike National Forest near Lake George, Colorado, in Park County. This primitive camping area provides free camping opportunities for self-sufficient campers seeking a more remote experience in the national forest. As a dispersed site, Thorpe Gulch does not have developed amenities such as restrooms, water, or trash service. Located within the 1.1 million-acre Pike National Forest, this area offers access to Colorado's diverse mountain terrain. Dispersed camping in Pike National Forest allows visitors to camp outside of developed campgrounds, typically along forest roads or in designated areas. Campers must follow forest regulations, including staying at least 100 feet from water sources and dispersing waste properly. Visitors should come prepared with all necessary supplies, including water, and plan to pack out all trash. The area is accessible via forest service roads, and conditions can vary seasonally. Winter access may be limited or impossible depending on snow conditions.

Directions

From Lake George, take County Road 77/Tarryall Road north along the South Platte River for scenic views. Turn onto County Road 31 south of Tarryall, then look for Forest Road 230 for dispersed sites. The last stretch includes a gate and some rougher dirt road; drive slowly and look for open sites.
