Closed — Closed for winter. The campground typically operates May through November as weather allows. Reservations are available from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day via Recreation.gov. Late September through late October the campground operates first-come, first-served with water facilities turned off.

About

Thomas Canyon Campground is located at the mouth of Thomas Canyon within the scenic Lamoille Canyon, a glacially-carved valley in the Ruby Mountains of northeast Nevada. At 7,200 feet elevation, the campground features 39 single and double sites nestled among groves of aspen and cottonwood trees that provide partial shade and spectacular fall color. Lamoille Creek flows through the site, offering fishing opportunities for brook and wild rainbow trout. The campground serves as a trailhead for the Thomas Canyon Trail, which climbs past several waterfalls, through an alpine meadow, and into a glacial cirque. Additional hiking and horseback riding trails throughout Lamoille Canyon lead to alpine lakes and dramatic vistas. The canyon road is popular for scenic driving and road cycling, and rock climbing routes are abundant on surrounding canyon walls. Each campsite provides breathtaking views of the jagged peaks and canyon walls that characterize this desert mountain island.

Directions

From I-80 at Elko, take any exit south to Idaho Street. Turn south on 12th Street (from east) or 5th Street (from west) to State Route 227. Travel 25 miles south on SR 227 to Forest Road 660 (Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway). Continue 8 miles on FR 660 to the campground on the right.
