About
South Ruby Campground is located at 6,000 feet elevation in the foothills of the Ruby Mountains, overlooking the expansive Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Ruby Valley is a remarkable high desert oasis, featuring spring-fed marshes and riparian corridors that support an exceptional diversity of wildlife. The refuge serves as home or stopover for over 220 bird species, including canvasback ducks, trumpeter swans, greater sandhill cranes, and sage grouse. Mule deer and pronghorn antelope are also common in the area. The campground provides excellent access to Ruby Lake, which is stocked with largemouth bass and several trout species. Birding and wildlife viewing opportunities are outstanding, with the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge headquarters located just two miles north. The area is steeped in history, situated along the Hastings Cutoff route near the Pony Express Trail and the historic ruins of Fort Ruby, where an interpretive trail offers insights into local history and spectacular mountain views. For hikers and off-road enthusiasts, the southern trailhead for the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail at Green Mountain is within reasonable driving distance. Dirt and gravel roads beginning at Harrison Pass and Overland Pass provide extensive routes for jeeps, motorcycles, OHVs, and mountain bikes. The campground itself sits in a pinyon pine and juniper forest offering partial shade and good privacy between sites. Additional amenities include a fish cleaning station, firewood for purchase, and a trolling motor charging station.
