About
Jims Lake Cabin offers one of the most secluded wilderness experiences on Admiralty Island within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness. This primitive Pan Abode-style log cabin is situated on a small rocky rise overlooking the northwest end of Jim's Lake at 232 feet elevation, hemmed in by dense old-growth forest with views to distant glacier-capped peaks. The small lake is away from most flight paths, providing exceptional solitude in a landscape defined by dense spruce and hemlock forests, lakes, and muskeg. The cabin sleeps up to six people on wooden bunkbeds without mattresses and is equipped with a wood stove for heat, table, benches, cooking counter, and an outhouse. Firewood is generally stocked but not guaranteed. A skiff with oars is available for exploring the lake; visitors may bring a small outboard motor under 10 horsepower per wilderness regulations. The cabin has no running water or electricity, and visitors must treat lake water before use. Anglers will find Jim's Lake a scenic setting for catching cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and kokanee salmon. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, and bald eagles frequenting the area. Access is by floatplane only, approximately 50 minutes from Juneau, with helicopter access prohibited due to wilderness designation. The lake typically freezes in fall, winter, and early spring, making floatplane access impossible during these periods. The lake is normally ice-free from mid-May through November.
