About

Jim's Lake Cabin offers an exceptional remote wilderness experience in the heart of the Kootznoowoo Wilderness on Admiralty Island. The cabin sits at 232 feet elevation on a small rocky rise adjacent to the beach, providing excellent overlooks of the small, pristine lake. Surrounded by dense old-growth spruce and hemlock forest, the setting includes views of distant glacier-capped peaks reaching over 3,000 feet. The traditional Pan Abode-style log cabin sleeps up to six on wooden bunk beds (two single, two double) and is equipped with a wood stove for heating, cooking counter, table and benches, and basic tools including an axe and maul. An outhouse provides sanitation. A skiff with oars is available for lake exploration; visitors may bring a small outboard motor (under 10 HP due to wilderness regulations). Personal flotation devices are not provided. This is one of the most solitary cabins on Admiralty Island. The small lake lies away from most flight paths, ensuring minimal disturbance. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own water or treating lake water, plus all food, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, light sources, and garbage bags for pack-out. The area is active brown bear habitat.

Directions

Located in the south-central portion of Admiralty Island at the north end of Jim's Lake. Access is by floatplane only from Juneau, approximately 50 minutes one-way. This cabin is within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness; helicopter access is prohibited. Reference USGS topographic maps Sitka C-1 and C-2.
