About
Tar Hollow State Park Campground occupies a peaceful wooded hollow in Ohio's Appalachian foothills, surrounded by the 16,046-acre Tar Hollow State Forest. The campground underwent a significant renovation project completed in spring 2026, adding full hookup campsites with upgraded electric, water, and sewer connections, new flush restrooms, and shower facilities throughout. The park centers around 15-acre Pine Lake, built during the Depression era by the WPA, which offers fishing, swimming at the 500-foot beach, and boating limited to electric motors (4 HP max). A boat launch ramp is located near the beach. The area earned its name from early settlers who extracted pine tar from the shortleaf and pitch pines growing on the ridges. Beyond camping, Tar Hollow offers 24 miles of hiking trails including a 21-mile backpack trail with primitive campsites, 25 miles of bridle trails, and 3 miles of mountain bike trails. Group camping accommodates up to 100 people, and five shelter houses provide additional overnight options.
