Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 3:49AM EDT by NWS Marquette MI

3:49 AM — 8:00 PM

Gusty southeast winds as high as 20 to locally 25 mph, combined with dry conditions will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across most of Upper Michigan away from the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. Burn restrictions remain in effect. For complete details, visit www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits, or by calling 866-922-2876.

About

Tahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses nearly 50,000 acres in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and is home to the state's second-largest waterfall. The park offers several camping options ranging from full-service modern sites to rustic riverside camping. Lower Falls Modern Campground features 188 sites across the Hemlock and Portage loops with 30-amp electric service (some 50-amp), while Rivermouth Modern Campground offers 72 sites with similar amenities plus a playground and accessible fishing platform. The Rivermouth Pines Campground provides 36 semi-modern sites in a wooded riverfront setting ideal for tent camping and small vehicles. All modern campgrounds feature flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, fire rings, and picnic tables at each site. A sanitation station serves RV campers seasonally from mid-May through mid-October. The park's location offers direct access to both Upper and Lower Falls via hiking trails, along with river access for kayaking and fishing. The Ronald A. Olson Island Bridge provides accessible viewing of the Lower Falls. Winter camping is available at select loops for those seeking a unique experience near the frozen waterfalls.
