About
Stump Creek Guard Station offers a unique opportunity to stay in a historic Forest Service cabin along what was once the Lander Cutoff for the Oregon Trail. Wagon ruts from covered wagons traveling over 150 years ago are still visible in the surrounding landscape. The cabin sits at 6,500 feet elevation in a grassy clearing surrounded by sagebrush and mixed-growth pines, with willow-lined Stump Creek flowing nearby. The one-room cabin features two bunk beds, a kitchen with gas stove and basic dishes, propane heater and lanterns, and a table with chairs. Guests must bring their own sleeping pads, drinking water, and garbage bags for pack-out. A vault toilet is located on-site. The area is home to black bear, elk, moose, mountain lion, and other wildlife. Hikers, horseback riders, cross-country skiers, and mountain bikers can explore the Stump Creek/Lander Trail, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fishing is available in Stump Creek, and hunting for game and birds is popular in the area. Off-road vehicle trails are accessible nearby.
Directions
From Afton, Wyoming, travel 4 miles north on Highway 89 to the town of Grover. At Grover, turn west and travel 3 miles to Auburn. Then go south 1/2 mile to Road 110, then west 4 miles to Road 109 for 2 miles. This will put you at the guard station.
