About

Lower O'Brien Campground is a first-come, first-served campground located along the Salmon River in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The campground features 10 campsites including 1 double-site nestled in a lodgepole pine forest setting. The Salmon River offers excellent fishing opportunities for steelhead and trout, while the nearby Sunbeam Hot Springs provides a natural soaking experience at 169 degrees Fahrenheit (temperature can be adjusted by moving rocks to allow cooler river water to flow in). The Warm Springs Creek Trail is easily accessible from the campground for day hiking and backpacking. For those interested in river recreation, a boat ramp at Yankee Fork provides access to 14 miles of Class III and IV rapids. History enthusiasts can explore the mining heritage of the area by touring the Land of the Yankee Fork north of Sunbeam Dam on Forest Road 013. The Sunbeam Dam, built to power mining operations on the Yankee Fork, remains the only dam ever constructed on the Salmon River before being partially destroyed with dynamite in 1934. Occupancy is limited to 10 days within a 30-day period within a 30-mile radius of SNRA. Campsites must be occupied the first night and cannot be left unattended for more than 24 hours. Pets must be leashed, and horses are permitted.
