About
The Steward J. Adams Education Site is part of the Crow Valley Recreation Area within Pawnee National Grassland, named in honor of an educator who deeply valued the grassland environment. This reservation-only, tents-only group site sits at an elevation of 4,800 feet on Colorado's short grass prairie, east of the Rocky Mountains. The site can accommodate up to 100 people for overnight or day-use gatherings, making it suitable for educational programs, group camping, or special events. The facility features a three-sided covered cooking shelter equipped with electrical outlets and three picnic tables, along with vault toilets. Parking accommodates up to 20 cars, trucks, or vans, or alternatively two 40-foot buses. RVs are not permitted at this site. The location provides exceptional opportunities for stargazing in the dark grassland skies, birdwatching (over 200 species have been documented in the area), and wildlife observation. The site is situated within the broader Crow Valley Recreation Area, which includes the Lee and Dorothy Rhoads Farm Implement Museum showcasing pioneer-era tools donated by homesteader descendants. The grassland landscape features eroding creek drainages and is dotted with cottonwood and elm trees. Visitors can explore nature trails, and the campground serves as a gateway to both the east and west units of Pawnee National Grassland and the 128-mile Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic Byway.
Directions
From Ault, travel 22 miles east on Highway 14, turn north on Weld County Road 77, travel 1/4 mile to campground entrance on the west side of the road. The Steward J. Adams Education Site is at the end of the campground road.
