About
Steel Creek Group Campground is situated in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest's Dubois Ranger District, 35 miles northeast of Dubois, Idaho, and 9 miles northwest of Kilgore, at an elevation of 6,675 feet. The campground is nestled among willow and pine trees along Steel Creek, a small stream that enhances the serene mountain setting with picturesque views of the surrounding Centennial Mountains Wilderness Study Area near the Montana-Idaho border. The campground features one large, accessible group site designed to accommodate gatherings of 1 to 200 people. The site includes a common parking area adjacent to a dining space equipped with picnic and serving tables, a grill, and a campfire circle. Vault toilets and drinking water are available on-site, with bear-resistant garbage containers and food lockers provided for safety in bear country. Steel Creek Group Campground serves as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, offering access to the Dubois Ranger District's extensive trail system with over 221 miles of trails, including 90 miles of motorized trails. Popular activities include hiking, hunting, fishing Steel Creek for trout, mountain biking, and ATV riding. The surrounding forest provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, with deer, bears, and various bird species frequenting the area. Access is via gravel roads suitable for most vehicles.
Directions
From Dubois, Idaho, travel north on Interstate 15 to the Stoddard Creek Exit (Exit 184). Go east on West Camas-Miners Creek Road (FR 006) approximately 14 miles to Steel Creek Road (FR 478), turn right and continue 0.75 miles to the campground entrance.
